Hello Everyone, Attached is the current list and I want to mention the Regional Conference, 25-28 June 2020 in Medford OR for your planning. We have the walks identified, the venue selected and plans are firming up for several social events; it's going to be outstanding! Our hotel is the Inn at the Commons, which will host the Thursday Meet and Mingle as well as the Saturday Banquet. Louise Dix, OTSVA President, has negotiated a block reservation with the hotel at very good rates and provided reservation information below. By the way, Tater Tours has already booked 30 rooms at the hotel, so commit early and join the fun. Reservations are now live and available to be made online or over the phone. Attendees can call the hotel directly at (toll free 866) 541-779-5811 and request guest rooms in the group block for Rogue Valley Regional Walking Conference or use the online booking link: https://www.reseze.net/servlet/SendPage?hotelid=1515&skipfirstpage=true&page=337329 Many thanks to the Four Plus Foolhardy Folks for hosting three spectacular walks in Larrabee State Park this weekend! Louise and I were extremely thrilled with the hikes and look forward to their next event. Check out our postings on Facebook. As with all events, a lot of time and energy goes into planning the walks and the payoff is your attendance. I encourage all NW walkers to look beyond your communities and support your neighboring clubs' events. Shown first are the eager volunteers at the Four Plus event and next are two tired, yet delighted, hikers atop Oyster Dome high above Samish Bay.
So far I have just under 100 Year Round/Seasonal Events reviewed for 2020 and a few more in the queue to be approved. That means there are still about 300 to be submitted by your clubs. Please keep working at building your 2020 plans. Also, the 2020 calendar is wide open for Traditional events, so start locking in your dates for those events as well. It's been my experience that the further out you plan and advertise your events, the better attended they are. Thanks, Tom NW Regional Director 829 NW 44th Ave Camas WA 98607 505-298-1256 "Solvitur ambulando, St. Augustine said It is solved by walking." "If you seek creative ideas go walking. Angels whisper to a man when he goes for a walk." Columbia River Volkssport Club was chartered August 31, 1984. As a way of celebrating the club's anniversary, I reached out to some of the earliest members asking for a bit about what they remember ... Lena DavisCRVC beginning 1984? My first walk was in 1986 at Tryon Creek State Park, a CRVC walk. There was an article in the Oregonian about Judy Berry and her Girl Scouts and volkswalking [see below]. Their next walk would be 9/13/1986 at Tryon Creek. I was on the Rotation Diet to lose 10# to fit in some of my clothes and my neighbor, a diabetic, needed to exercise too. We had been walking in our neighborhood and were ready for a challenge. We went out with snacks, water and made the 10K, we might have walked a circle twice. (My first long cut.) I joined the club that day, hoping to get more info on upcoming walks. CRVC meetings were held at the Scout Office on Bangy Rd off I-5. I did not attend as I am not familiar with the west side of Portland and I don't drive at night. I did attend a meeting in Parkrose at Marge Lusby's house. We filled out start cards for the preregistered walkers and I got home at 11:30 pm. Judy Berry and Judy Noel planned the walks at that time. CRVC only club in the area. Silverton had the only YRE. Then volkssporting took off. Marge LusbyMEMORIES So many memories!!! so I shall just ramble. Way back in the late 1980s and early 1990s we some times handled 500 or so walkers with only 3 or 4 people. We always had to have hat pins and medals. Sometimes we didn't get them in time for the walk and we had to mail them all out to the walkers. Pre registration was also very important so the walkers would be assured they would get the hat pins and medals before we ran out. So before the walk, those we had had to be packaged with hand written pre reg cards (hundreds) ready for the walkers to pick up at the walk. In the beginning you had to have water at the every check point and you had to have manned check points so you can imagine how we were going to do that at our first Columbia River Gorge walk. Well we didn't and were we ever in trouble with the "Volks police" and at that time all trails had to be marked (no written directions) so more trouble for CRVC and at that same walk our route took us onto Thunder Island in Cascade Locks and unbeknown to us the Klamath Falls Cave men were having a camp out there and wouldn't let our walkers walk through it But everything got solved that day thanks to the walkers I could talk for hours. I think you all know that CRVC was started by Judy Berry and her Girl Scout group. So thank you Judy for so many good times with CRVC. The Sunday Oregonian, May 22, 1988
The Bend Bulletin published an article this past weekend that the Shilo Inn in Bend will be sold at auction on September 6th, just days before our event. Although the people at the Shilo assure me that there won't be a sale and our event is safe, we aren't prepared to take the risk.
If you have reservations at the Shilo you may, of course, keep them if you'd like. If not, new lodging has been reserved at: COMFORT INN & SUITES 62065 SE 27th Street, Bend, OR, 97701, US (541) 617-9696 https://www.choicehotels.com/oregon/bend/comfort-inn-hotels Please say that you are joining Columbia River Volkssport Club for the group rate. I apologize if this causes you any inconvenience. We hope you'll be happy with the venue changes. See you in September! I overlooked a big event coming in August and want to add it to the list of great multi-day events for you to consider. The Four Plus Foolhardy Folks have an exciting weekend of hikes on Aug 2-4 with three hikes near Fairhaven, WA. Consult the Pathfinder or AVA events listing to get the details. Louise and I will see you there.
Just received this note from the AVA IT Committee about the Online Start Box. We updated our logins and they seem to work just fine. Took a little persistence, but we got logged in. The Online Start Box (OSB) is up and running on my.ava.org after a heroic effort by Chris Zeglin. Part of what made this so challenging was Chris's commitment to deploy improvements/interface changes (based on user feedback) to the OSB deployed on my.ava.org while assuring all user data and account fund records were imported properly from the cvau.org based system. Also, the event details for all 2019 and 2020 OSB events in the AVA ESR have been updated to reflect this move (for example "www.cva4u.org" has been replaced with "https://my.ava.org"). See for example: http://clubs.ava.org/gen3/data/event_details_mcg.asp?eventid=112359 CRVC received the following request through its website Contact form. In the interest of helping the class with its project, I am posting this article for your enlightenment. Comment Happy Wednesday! My name is Rachel and I volunteer in an after-school wellness program for a great group of youngsters. While discussing the importance of exercise and looking for information on the benefits of walking, we came across your webpage http://www.walking4fun.org/ We want to say thanks! One of my students, Anne, did some web searches at home on the topic of walking and I was surprised when she brought in this article for me to see - https://www.oasisfinancial.com/tips-for-pedestrian-safety-walking-safety-rules/ I suggested that she share this with you because it had a lot of great safety information for those that like to walk. Would you please add it as a link to your webpage for Anne so that your visitors can see it as well? I want to impress Anne and all of the kids, that by having the courage to simply ask, things can be accomplished that they might not otherwise think can. This is a simple exercise, but my hope is that it will be an experience that will create a foundation that can be built upon throughout their lives when they are thinking about trying other things throughout their lives. Would you please help us with this exercise and lesson? I would love to surprise the entire group the next time we meet. I also don't think it'd hurt that I promised the group a protein-packed, yet healthy pizza day if you'd help! Would you please help with this? Please let me know if you’d be willing so I can share the exciting news with them! Thank you in advance! Rachel |
